North Coast Open Studio Tour was initiated by two local artists, Sasha Pepper and Susan Fox, who had participated in studio tours in larger metropolitan areas. In 1998, Open Studios became a program of the Ink People and the Humboldt Arts Council provided administrative and gallery support to the fledgling event. Grassroots support was immediate; artists pooled a reasonable fee of $40 each which paid for signage and map books containing an image of a representative piece of each artist’s work and directions to each studio. Artists with marketing expertise worked on advertising sales for the map book and spread marketing duties between them, securing spots in the newspapers and newsletters to reach local art patrons.
