Businesses, Public Spaces | Cafes, Restaurants

An entry-level way to get your work in front of the public is to show in cafes and other businesses (see below). This kind of show is good for both parties - it gets you exposure and maybe some sales, and makes the business environment more attractive and interesting to patrons.
When approaching the managers or owners of business spaces, be very professional. Set a time to meet with them, and bring your resume and your portfolio, and/or slides with a viewer. If they agree to have your work on their walls, ask if they’ll host a reception, supply food or drink at the reception, and if their insurance will cover your work (doubtful). Show up on time, hang efficiently and cleanly, and take down your work when you promise. (Don’t show up late, or in the busiest part of the day, and step on the patrons). Post your prices under the work or in one list on the wall. A loose price sheet is unwieldy and may be lost or damaged.
Understand in advance that owners may be concerned about content, and will probably require slides of each piece before approving a show. They may restrict the subject matter (ie. no nudes) or reject images of graphic violence. They have the right to make these choices, since the property is privately owned, though accessible to the public.

Because businesses frequently relocate or close, you should always call before you send slides.
If you discover that a business is no longer showing art, PLEASE let us know.

Cafes and Restaurants

The walls listed here are alternatives to galleries. The following list, though not exhaustive, will give artists a much greater choice of available public walls. Cafes offer constant exposure to a broad spectrum of people, and some work does sell off the walls, especially in more affluent neighborhoods. The owners are happy to have their walls brightened by original art, and usually do not charge a commission, but you should check with the owners about commissions, receptions and publicity.

Ask about insurance or compensation in case work is damaged or stolen. While this almost never happens, it is better to know if the full value of your work is at risk. Some of the following may have closed or changed hands. As always, we welcome information!
