Alternative Galleries
and Spaces
The following are loosely
classified as alternative galleries. These include colleges,
non-profit and cooperative galleries, as well as some eclectic galleries
with a different or 'alternative' agenda to the mainstream galleries (whose
primary interest is sales.) Some alternative galleries dont have
as much status in the mainstream art world, but they lead to shows in
other galleries, as well as some sales. The distinction may be a little
fuzzy, but you can check out ArtNews for a pretty good idea of
what the mainstream galleries are interested in and ArtWeek or
SF Arts Monthly for more risky, local, or personal creative
expression in 'alternative' venues.
Because galleries frequently relocate or close,
you should always call before you send slides. If you discover
that a gallery is no longer in business, PLEASE let us know.
