Submission Guidelines for Artists' Stories

Become a Featured Artist.  Submit a story (or staff the site) and get an online portfolio!

   The first 12 artists who submit [publishable] stories to Artist Resource each year will become Featured Artists. There will be one Featured Artist per month (or until we get another story). Each Featured Artist will get 5 pieces of artwork displayed as thumbnails on their own Portfolio Page, linked to 5 full-frame pages and a resume page. These pages will be accessible from the Artist Resource home page, and from the artist's story page.

Your Story

Your story must be art-related. For an example, read From the Feet On Up.
The language you use does not need to be perfect - it will sound like your voice. But your story must be easy to follow and have a clear focus. And no typos! It can be written like an article, or it can be a short story.
We are looking for at least 750 words on a variety of topics, including:

• Making, showing and selling art work (best and worst experiences)
• Learning something new about art or techniques
• Learning something new about yourself through art, personal sacrifice or obstacles overcome
• Overcoming creative blocks or performance anxiety
• Legal or copyright issues, intellectual property, theft of art or images
• Political issues in art, art as propaganda, gender and racial bias in the artworld, censorship, etc.
• Apprenticeships and mentors, how have teachers shaped you, how have you shaped others?
• How have you shaped your art career, where are you going and why? Do you have a plan? How does it work?
• Where do your ideas come from?. . . Doodles? Dreams? Exercises in technique? How do you develop them?
• Have you had an enlightening or spiritual experience through art?
• How do you figure out pricing? What do you tell buyers? How much do galleries take? How do you negotiate with buyers or galleries?
• How do you feel when you sell your work?
• Do competitions help your career? What are your thoughts on the jurying process?
• Is a degree in art important? Has it helped you? How?
• What artist/s do you admire? Why? How have they affected you and your work?

     The text should be between at least 750 words. It's okay if your story was previously published, as long as you still have the copyright.
     Your story MUST be proofread for spelling and punctuation. I will not edit it, or publish it with silly errors. (My advice? Have a friend read it after you spellcheck it.)
     Submit your stories as email or text attachments to ArtistEye (see below).

Sending Your Story

Easy way: You can copy the text of your story and then paste it into the body of an email. You probably need to have your browser open to paste into email.

OR:   You can 'attach' a Microsoft Word, PageMaker or QuarkXpress v.3.3 document to your email. If you do this, you MUST tell me in the email which program and version you used!  

Type "Artist's Story" in the 'Subject' line of your email and send it to ArtEye@artistresource.org.

OR:    You can also send your story via snailmail on a DOS-format HD diskette. Inquire by email first.
