About Ed Grutzner
My mother owns a Grutzner painting. Many years back we discovered that Grutzner
was considered one of the last masters. His works are encircled by questions.
Apparently, there was a copy cat artist that painted as well as Grutzner did
but, would sign Grutzner's name on his paintings. Tulane University had a small
book on Grutzner and his works years ago and I am not sure if the book would
still be there. Oddly enough, our Grutzner is about 14" x 10" and is of monks
in the kitchen which would go along with the theme in your painting. Grutzner
did the original Falstaff painting and several others all revolving
around kitchens, monks, wine, and food. They were called the Cloister Kitchens.
If you are able to find more information on Grutzner, please share this information
with me. Sincerely, kaz, April 04,

Seeking Ed Grutzner / His Work
I also have in my posesion a painting called "Sweet Revenge" which deplics two monks playing cards and drinking ale. It is signed and dated 1901. I've had it for a long time and it's in good shape. I'm trying to find out it's value. Thanks in advance, Mark Rondina, March 04, 2000
Have E. Krutzner oil(?) painting of monks also. Was one of two in set, family member has other. Depicts five monks together, one holding a keg and candle. Was framed according to label on back at Paul Kauffman fine arts on Broadway in New York City. d blair, February 19, 2000
I was also trying to loacte some info about an artist named "Ed. Grutzner" because I have a photogravure of one of his paintings currently listed on eBay and wanted to find out more information about the artist. I think he painted in the 1880s. Take a look at my print and let me know if you think it's the same artist. The themes described in this message thread seem to be similar to the ones in my print, entitled "Strong Tobacco." http://www.peytonstreet.com/forsale/strong_tobacco_scan.jpg, Teri Morris, July 10, 1999
My inlaws also have an oil by Grutzner. It was given to her mother many years ago from an estate sale. It is of 4 monks, one holding a keg and jug, with another looking in through a window. We know nothing about it, except it too is not in perfect shape. Please relay any info you have, thanks.Jean, April 04, 1999
I have a painting that is pretty old and not in the greatest shape. The name
on the bottom is Grutzner and it looks like an oil. There is either another
signature below his or it may be the title of the piece, I cant read it. The
subject is a monk holding some turnips or some such and he is in a cellar. A
friend told me that she had heard of this artist, have you? Any information
you may be able to obtain would be most enjoyable. I do not know where it is
from. Sincerely, John Kelly,
