About Anton Ditlief

Well, I see no one has been having much luck!! I did want to share with you all that the TMCO trademark that you find in the lower righthand corner of the painting has got to stand for Turner Manufacturing Company, who claimed they were the largest producer of decorative home furnishings. My husband did some kind of search on this company on the net and found they were based in Chicaco and went out of existence either in the 60' or 70's. (We misplaced the exact info and now he can't remember what site he went into to find the info). (Isn't that just like a man! In any event the style number of my small print is 2450, code#53. On the back of my large print is hand written the word Sonata and below is handwritten 1606X. From all the responses I see, I think we all can pretty much conclude that Antoni and M. Ditlef are either the same person or are related. I recently walked into an antique store and would you believe I found a large red dress Sonata picture. The dealer stated she gets them off and on and finds them mostly from estate sales in nearby Pittsburgh. She really knew nothing about it though. Sold it to me for $70. The local music shop owner from my home town bought a bunch of them for $3. back in the late 40's. Does anyone have the knowledge as to how to do research on Turner Mfg Comany? Maybe we could find out that way!
Thanks, Barbara. May 14, 2001

I too have this artwork...It belonged to my Aunties. My picture is in a gold frame and has a sticker on the back that tells it was frammed by Turner Mfg. Co. (Turner Wall Accessories). The picture was framed in 1969. It is signed by Antonio Ditlef. It has a small plaque on the front of the frame that reads "Duet" M.Ditlef. Maybe the Turner Mfg. Co. could lend some info... I took mine to a local gallery (lady in red, no yellow roses on piano, window to right and a table, mantle w/picture of people in 18th century clothes, two candlelabras, table at left w/fruit, and a folding screen with a floral design) He said that mine was a watercolor, no markings on the back of the painting, cardboard backing (he said to keep the original backing that it would be worth more). It is signed m. Dihel (Dihef?) he said he thought the name was German, but it didn't have any more information. I am going to go to the library to see if I can find any thing else out. I would love to solve this mystery. This was my Grandmother's and she doesn't remember where the painting came from. My mother said that my Grandmother had it since she was a little girl. I am also going to check w/step uncle because he used to own a art gallery and it may have come from there. Candace June 17, 2001

I am desperately trying to find this painting. My grandmother had it as a child and my mother has been searching for it since. I am talking about people have been describing as the Sonata by Antoni Ditlef. I understand it was available in different color dresses, I am interested in finding the woman in the red dress. If anybody who has posted here could somehow take a picture of the painting and email it to me, I would greatly appreciate it. Also, If anyone is interested in selling a print of the painting, please get in contact with me.
Thanks alot, and good luck to everyone hunting down more information on it! Tim, June 06, 2001

Hi My sister in law has this picture of a lady in a red dress. she is playing a piano. there is a mantle in the background with a picture hanging over it. The frame is 28 1/2 inches by 22 1/2 inches. It is very ornate. We are also interested in learning more information about this painting. Joyce Mlsna, June 02, 2001

I also have a picture signed in gold script by Antoni Ditlef. I have tried to find about it, to no avail. It is a lady in a shimmery white dress, sitting at a brown, squarish piano with claw-like feet, and a young boy playing the piano. There is a mantle/fireplace in the background, as well as a wooden chair (left side) and a chest-type piece of furniture beside the chair. There are vases of flowers on the mantle and a vase on the piano. There are also some large, yellow roses in the bottom right-hand corner of the picture. My picture is about 22" by 28", and is in a nice wooden frame. I haven't been able to make out any writing other than the name Antoni Ditlef, but from the description I've read on this site, it sounds much like the painting named "Allegro." I'd love to find out more about it. Annie, May 28, 2001

I have a small signed print of the painting entitled,Sonata by M. Ditlef. It is of a young lady in a red gown seated at a baby grand piano which is in front of a mantle. On the mantle is a vase of red flowers and two crystal candelabras on each side. There is a large window to the right. This print was sold in my home town either in the 40's, 50's or both. I know my aunt receive on for her wedding in the 50's. They were sold by a local furniture store for $3.00 They come with different colored gowns, red, green, white that I know of. Also, they come with the lady facing a different direction. On the back of mine it is covered with paper that says Turner Wall Accessories which I found out is not longer in existence. I am very interested in securing any other info anyone has about this painting and the artist. Also, I possibly would be interested in purchasing a large print, hopefuly of the red gown. Please help.

This painting was in her first home, over 30 years ago. This copy has a table in the right hand corner with two pictures hanging above it and another table in the left corner with flowers. On the mantel are more red flowers with two crystal candelabra.Kathleen Andres, October 03, 2000

Hi I have a painting also that has a woman sitting a piano a white or cream color piano. On top of the piano has yellow roses and she is facing a green wall with 3 pictures on it. Also there seems to be a dresser and a mirror. To the right of the picture there is another room. Before entering the room there is Green Drapes. To the left side of her there is a small wooden round table with red roses on it. She is wearing a red/pink gown and has brown hair. She is sitting on a bench with small blue stripes. I make the artist name out to the best as to: Antoni Ditlef

Dittef...M.Dihel ...M.Dihef.  the work looks like late 19th or early 20th century american south art. the painting is a woman seated at a baby grand piano placed in front of a fireplace mantel. located to the right is a large pane window. she is wearing a red dress that flows to the floor (like something scarlet o'hara would wear) plaese help me.....Joleen, September 13, 1998
