To walk in the woods, explore a tidepool, or observe a flower in bloom refreshes my spirit.
I am a silk painter, quiltmaker and fabric printer. My choice of imagery comes from my deep respect for and fascination with the natural world. I am continually surprised and delighted by the astonishing variety, beauty and fecundity of life around us. The multi-layered patterns of nature are so complex that they often appear random. I take that as permission to create wild multi-layered motifs.. Marine life, flowers and leaves offer me endless choices of colors and forms to overlay and celebrate, and silk painting offers me the transparency to overlay them all is shimmering profusion.
My work has been exhibited in New York, Los Angeles, san Francisco, Santa Fe, Portland Oregon, Hannover Germany and Beijing China.
For the last 6 years I have been artist-in-residence, through the California Arts Council, at 30th Street Senior Center in San Francisco, working with elders in textile media. I also teach silk painting and shibori (Japanese shaped resist dyeing) workshops in the community. Currently I am co-authoring a book on shibori techniques.
